Spraying Techniques

Pest management has assumed great importance

Success of pesticide application depends upon the following important factors:

  1. Correct time, manner and site of pesticide application on the basis of the life history, habit and habitat of the pest / disease.
  2. Apply pesticide in the morning or evening hours and not at noon.
  3. Avoid application when wind velocity is more than 10-12 kmph.
  4. Always spray in the direction of wind.
  5. In the event of likely rainfall, application of pesticides should not be done.
  6. The droplet size has an important effect on coverage; hence right choice of nozzles for a particular requirement is necessary. Medium size droplets (200-400 micron), by using a high volume sprayer fitted with cone nozzle, are ideal for spraying insecticides / fungicides.
  7. The volume of spray fluid should be sufficient to thoroughly and uniformly wet the plant surface.
  8. General precaution during application

    1. Maintain a normal and constant walking speed during application.
    2. Ensure proper pressure in the spraying equipment during application.
    3. Drift and drip of spray should always be avoided.
    4. Ensure uniform application of pesticide, without any overlapping or undue gaps.
    5. Keep nozzle at a suitable height above the plant during spraying of insecticide / fungicide.
    6. Clean the application equipment before and after use with water and washing soda solution.

  9. Use correct spray equipment especially high volume sprayers, such as, knapsack sprayers.
